HTML support in labels

A common requirement from our natural history subject matter experts is that scientific names must be italicized. I see that this use case is explicitly mentioned in the Cookbook but also that "HTML is not permitted in label or other properties".

Our 3D scenes (and viewer) often have scientific names in the "title" of the scene. A natural extension of this when developing IIIF support seems to be to pull this information from the scene 'label' in the manifest, but this is at odds with the requirement above. Is there a different way this can/should be done to support the scientific name use case or is there a possibility of extending this support to labels?

Italicizing scientific names in titles is indeed a very common use case in biology and natural history domains, thanks for pointing this out. We can discuss how this applies to label in a future editor's meeting. I'd say for working inside the current structures available, HTML is allowed in the summary property and scientific names could be included there.

Agreed, it just seems kind of hacky to use summary as a proxy for scene title (unless there's a precedent for that).
