How does one test the tests?

It's probably a cart before the horse issue, but I'm finding myself failing to come up with a testing strategy..

At its core, api-spec will be a set of opinionated cucumber step definitions that we've used at Nutshell. But is there a good strategy for writing tests to assert expectations on these steps?

This is really just a placeholder while I mull things over.
